Microsoft have just released a new version of Skype‘s Linux version. The new Skype will now let you sign in using your Microsoft account and start a conversation with your Windows Live Messenger, Hotmail and Outlook.com contacts.
Skype 4.1 also have eliminated the need to open multiple conversation windows. Now, everything can be managed from one place. Different audio streams for alerts and dial-pad during calls (press ‘D’) have been added while improving the audio and video quality. This update also bring some stability improvements and multiarch support (One package for both 32bit and 64bit systems).
When Microsoft bought Skype, we thought the Linux version will be ignored for ever. Previously, Skype for Linux didn’t get any updates for a very long time and the package stood in the beta stage. But as soon as Microsoft acquired Skype, they updated the whole app and made it stable. Now, it’s getting constant updates and I hope they’ll keep it well updated just like the Windows version!
To Install Skype 4.1 :
- Before you do anything, if you have Skype already installed, please remove it completely by issuing the following command in the terminal :
sudo apt-get purge skype sudo apt-get autoremove
- Next, download the right package from here : http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/on-your-computer/linux And install it.
Note : Don’t get fooled… My Skype ID is not ‘pubudu’ as shown in the screenshot. :)
